Savoring those old friendships
by Betsy Levinson
There’s something immutable about old friendships. I’m talking about friends from grade school and high school. From your hometown. Before you moved away and started living your adult life. Before careers, marriage, children, grandchildren.
People who know and love you without question. No posturing or filtering the conversation.
I’m so fortunate to have a small group of such friends, and they live pretty nearby. We’ve gotten together for “girls’ weekends,” which were just heaven.
The older I get, the more precious these friendships are. Of course, I love the new people I’ve met, and I have a wonderful circle of friends now. I’m engaged in my community, and enjoy volunteering in my town.
But catching up with an old friend, laughing at the way we were, well, that’s just perfection.
I’ve heard it’s rare to have a person who, as characterized by a colleague, you could call if you got into big trouble. Who’d ask no questions, but offer support.
If you have people from your past that fall into that category, good for you. You’re lucky. Take the time to get in touch. The pandemic has divided us all way too much.
